Why CCA Fencing?
CCA fencing, like all CCA Athletics, seeks to incorporate all the areas of academic virtue into physical, spiritual, and mental acuity. What is learned in the classroom is incorporated into what the student does on the field. Students are encouraged and taught to think creatively and critically, utilizing classroom knowledge and training to perfect their athletics abilities. Moreover, our athletes are discipled to ensure that the honing of their physical skills is accompanied by the maturing of their spiritual character and love for God. Here are some other reasons:
- Strength and Skill: Students will develop and improve physical skills such as balance, coordination, and muscle control as they learn to fence effectively and correctly.
- Knowledge: Due to the rich history fencing has both as a sport and as a martial art, students will look broadly at the history of fencing, as well as have the opportunity to look at and use practice replicas of historical rapiers.
- Striving for the Prize: The class will also foster a spirit of friendly competition as students square off against one another. This will of course include development of sportsmanship as students learn to both win and lose gracefully and politely, celebrating the accomplishments of their peers, even when the accomplishment was beating them.
- The Honor System: Students will also develop the values of honor and honesty. Our use of non-electrical equipment means that students will be expected to call their own shots, and admit it when they have been hit. Except with a coach is directly refereeing the bout, this will mean that students are on the honor system.
- Safety is Key: As the sport does involve the students attacking one another with steel swords, safety will be a top priority. Students will be held to strict standards of safety both in the safety equipment they must wear, and in the way they use their weapons.
